I väntan på stormen

All over the news, on Facebook, Twitter etc. everything is related to Sandy.

When we lived in California I had the nagging worry about earthquakes. However, I think it worried me more before we moved there than when we actually lived there. Sure, I felt a couple of them, but there weren’t any severe one’s during our seven years in Mountain View. The most exciting experience was when a thunder struck the electric pole outside our kitchen window. Private firework that luckily didn’t hit anyone!

What I have earned over the years though is the importance of emergency contacts. Who becomes responsible for my kids if I won’t be able to make it to their school for a couple of days? When I was walking in the snow to pick up my kids this winter, it felt good to have the back up of friends to check in with and know they wouldn’t be too far away if I couldn’t make it to school.

Before we moved to Seattle, I believed in my innocence that it would be “less risky” to live in Seattle than California. However, while reading an interview in Swea’s newsletter with Agneta Dahl, (a Swedish lady in charge of the coast guard), I had mixed feelings. First, since I have met Agneta, I felt safe having her covering my back in a disaster. Secondly, it was scary to realize the possibilities of natural disasters in this area; earthquakes, volcano outbreak, tsunami…just to mention a few.

I am not a person who get stressed easily, and I am sure we can survive a month on all the food we have in our pantry. However, with what is going on at the East Coast, it may be time to upgrade our emergency set…I still remember three days stuck in the house last winter. At least our gas and electricity worked at that time!

To all friends on the East coast keep warm and safe – I am thinking about you!

Linda
